What is TNR?

From Phillycats.org:

A Solution to Overpopulation – Trap-Neuter-Return-Management

“Nothing kills more cats than overpopulation,” states Alley Cat Allies, a national group that advocates Trap-Neuter-Return-Management (TNRM) to control the feral cat population.  TNRM is becoming the national standard across the United States and is already the standard in the United Kingdom.  TNRM is a humane, non-lethal method of feline population control in which cats are humanely trapped, then transported to a veterinarian where they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated.  Their left ear is tipped so people will recognize that the cat has been sterilized and vaccinated.  Unfortunately, true adult feral cats are rarely sociable and are not suitable as indoor pets.  These cats are returned to their original environment where caregivers provide them with food, water, shelter, and medical care as needed.  It is a more effective long term solution than trap and kill.

At this point, we are not sure of the disposition of all of the cats, but it is our hope that as many of them are abandoned pets, they will be able to be pets again.

Education:

As important as it is to remove the cats from their current situation, we think it is just as important to education the neighborhood on the importance of spaying or neutering your pet.

We’re hoping to work with the community to inform them of why they should spay/neuter, and where they can go for low-cost surgery. We’ve had a couple ideas – from handing out flyers door-to-door to making “Temple Cats” collars with our logos to help out.

We’ve also thought about asking local vendors if they would participate in a program that gave a free meal to people who showed proof that they spayed or neutered their pet. If you’re interested in helping with our education efforts, or if you have any ideas, please visit the contact page and let us know!

Your donations will help a cat!

Some of our expenses:
Renting traps
Spay/neuter surgery + shots & flea treatment for each cat($25/cat)
FIV/FeLV testing($20/cat)
Microchip ($5/cat)
Fostering (food, medicine, etc)

We plan to give you the opportunity to sponsor a specific cat after we catch them.

If you would like to help, but do not have a paypal account, please use the contact form and we will tell you how to send a donation.
